ASI THE KEEPER
by Dotted Green Sparrow
“What’s your name again?” I asked him. “It’s Asi.” he told me as he walked in.
Ahhh right right! Asi. This is not the first time he told me his name but I kept forgetting. He’s the cheerful middle aged man in green overalls who regularly visits our office to check on the potted plants in every corner of our workplace. With a water spray on one hand and gardening scissors on the other, he hums a tune while he inspects every leaf on every stem of every plant. He was not in his usual joyful mood earlier, just seriously working and no humming. He spotted some fungus in one of the plants. It’s already halfway its 5 ft. high body. With a frown, he knelt down in front of the plant to trim down the infected leaves and to scrape off the remaining fungus on the stems.
“You love doing that don’t you!?” I commented as soon as I noticed what he was doing. He turned to smile and said, “These plants are helpless, they need a keeper like me to take care of them. This plant has fungus, soon it will spread and cover every leaf, and then the plant dies. It will be sad because these plants add beauty to your office. But its beauty is in its life, if it dies, it will not have a place here. My job is important, I don’t just water plants, I take care of life.”
Wow! I didn’t know he looks at his job that way. He takes care of life he claims. That is meaning! No wonder why he hums joyfully every time, he finds meaning in what he does. Looking at Asi I envy the satisfaction. He’s happy with a humble yet meaningful job. To take care of lives. Some would only see him as a maintenance staff, but to him, he is a keeper.
While watching Asi work, I see the plant as myself. I too have a keeper in Jesus. I wonder what He hums when He works to take care of my life every day. I would like to believe that as Asi paid special attention to that plant, God too pays special attention to me every time. How wonderful it is to know that there is a God who takes care of me with special undivided attention. A certain somebody who values my beauty, my existence… my life.
“There” Asi said as he stood up. “Looks good now, I hope to see its better when I come back.”
Before the green suited guy headed for the door he asked teasingly, “You remember my name ma’am?” with a slight grin.
“It’s Asi” I told him as he walked out… “the keeper” I whispered.
